Performance analysis of IEEE 802.11 DCF with stochastic reward nets

چکیده
In this paper, we present a performance study to evaluate the mean delay and the average system throughput of IEEE 802.11-based wireless local area networks (WLANs). We consider the distributed coordination function (DCF) mode of medium access control (MAC). Stochastic reward nets (SRNs) are used as a modelling formalism as it readily captures the synchronization between events in the DCF mode of access. We present a SRN-based analytical model to evaluate the mean delay and the average system throughput of the IEEE 802.11 DCF by considering an on–off traffic model and taking into account the freezing of the back-off counter due to channel capture by other stations. We also compute the mean delay suffered by a packet in the system using the SRN formulation and by modelling each station as an M/G/1 queue. We validate our analytical model by comparison with simulations. Copyright# 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Analytical modeling of bidirectional multi-channel IEEE 802.11 MAC protocols
This paper presents an analytical approach to model the bi-directional multi-channel IEEE 802.11 MAC protocols (Bi-MCMAC) for ad hoc networks. Extensive simulation work has been done for the performance evaluation of IEEE 802.11 MAC protocols. Since simulation has several limitations, this work is primarily based on the analytical approach. The objective of this paper is to show analytically th...
متن کاملSRN Model for IEEE 802.11 DCF MAC Protocol in Multi-hop Ad Hoc Networks with Hidden Nodes
Since its development for WLAN, IEEE 802.11 standard has been widely used for various wireless networks due to the low cost and effectiveness in reducing collisions with simple and decentralized mechanisms. In this paper we present a novel analytical SRN model for performance evaluation of IEEE 802.11 DC F MAC protocol in multi-hop ad hoc networks in the presence of hidden nodes, taking into ac...
متن کاملAnalysis of Unsaturation Performance of IEEE 802.11 DCF with and without Slow Contention Window Decrease
Most of analytical models proposed so far for the IEEE 802.11 distributed coordination function (DCF) focus on saturation performance. In this paper, we develop an analytic model for unsaturation performance evaluation of the IEEE 802.11 DCF with and without slow contention window decrease (SCWD). The model explicitly takes into account the carrier sensing mechanism and an additional backoff in...
متن کاملPerformance of Reliable Transport Protocol over IEEE 802.11 Wireless LAN: Analysis and Enhancement
IEEE 802.11 Medium Access Control(MAC) is proposed to support asynchronous and time bounded delivery of radio data packets in infrastructure and ad hoc networks. The basis of the IEEE 802.11 WLAN MAC protocol is Distributed Coordination Function(DCF), which is a Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance(CSMA/CA) with binary slotted exponential back-off scheme. Since IEEE 802.11 MAC...
متن کاملAnalysis of the IEEE 802.11 DCF with Service Differentiation Support in Non-saturation Conditions
Although the performance analysis of the IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) in saturation state has been extensively studied in the literature, little work is present on performance analysis in non-saturation state. In this paper, a simple model is proposed to analyze the performance of IEEE 802.11 DCF with service differentiation support in non-saturation states, which helps t...
